A series of 66 line engraving vignettes, + 1 in the Cornish series, Published H. Besley, Exeter, from 1848 to 1871. They were issued singly and in booklets of 4, 6, 12, 30, 60 etc, the smaller ones often having 'Views of Devonshire' on the decorated front wrappers, and the specific title of the area concerned, e.g. 'Plymouth & Neighbourhood', on the back. The largest size was also published as VIEWS IN DEVONSHIRE AND CORNWALL, with about 35 Devon titles. There are second, and sometimes third, 'states' of many of the plates, some with very substantial alterations, though frequently retaining the original date. A series of about 117 line engraving vignettes after G. Townsend (to no. 174) and S. R. Ridgway (from no. 175 to no. 215), except where stated, published H. Besley, Exeter from 1853 to c1875. Smaller than those in S.227 above, they are also distinguishable by having serial numbers, starting at no. 100. Besley's Cornish Views were allotted nos. 1-99, but they overran slightly so that some numbers are duplicated. The Views appeared in booklets of 18, 30 etc, as illustrations to Besley's Route Books and Hand Books, on cards and on letterheads. Two different engravings seem to have been given the number 136. A series of 66 line engraving vignettes, + 1 in the Cornish series, Published H. Besley, Exeter, from 1848 to 1871. They were issued singly and in booklets of 4, 6, 12, 30, 60 etc, the smaller ones often having 'Views of Devonshire' on the decorated front wrappers, and the specific title of the area concerned, e.g. 'Plymouth & Neighbourhood', on the back. The largest size was also published as VIEWS IN DEVONSHIRE AND CORNWALL, with about 35 Devon titles. There are second, and sometimes third, 'states' of many of the plates, some with very substantial alterations, though frequently retaining the original date. A series of about 117 line engraving vignettes after G. Townsend (to no. 174) and S. R. Ridgway (from no. 175 to no. 215), except where stated, published H. Besley, Exeter from 1853 to c1875. Smaller than those in S.227 above, they are also distinguishable by having serial numbers, starting at no. 100. Besley's Cornish Views were allotted nos. 1-99, but they overran slightly so that some numbers are duplicated. The Views appeared in booklets of 18, 30 etc, as illustrations to Besley's Route Books and Hand Books, on cards and on letterheads. Two different engravings seem to have been given the number 136.
